Know the Signs: Prioritize Natural Gas Safety in San Tan Valley

sept-safety

As the leaves begin to turn and the cooler winds signal the approach of fall, this time of year in San Tan Valley is not just about the change of seasons. It's also an opportune time to prioritize safety, especially when it comes to potential hazards in and around our homes.

Natural gas plays a critical role in our daily lives, heating our homes, powering certain appliances, and more. However, it's imperative for residents to know what to do in case of a gas emergency.

Spotting a Natural Gas Leak

Do you know the signs of a natural gas leak? Be aware, and act immediately if you:

  • Smell a scent reminiscent of rotten eggs.
  • Hear an unusual noise, whether it's a hissing or whistling, coming from pipelines or appliances.
  • See visual indicators such as dirt being blown around in the absence of wind or bubbles forming in standing water.

Your safety and the safety of those around you should always be paramount. If you ever suspect a leak:

  • Do not try to locate the source of the leak.
  • Do not light a match, use any electronic devices, or flip any switches.
  • Evacuate everyone from the area immediately.

Once in a safe location, call 911 and Mesa's gas emergency hotline at 480-644-4277.
Staying educated and prepared can make all the difference.

The San Tan Valley community prides itself on looking out for one another. This season, let's strengthen that bond by ensuring we all stay safe and informed.
